We have met suor Maria Marrone
On Saturday 19 June, in the bucolic setting of La Ferté in Asti, the Wecare board met Sister Maria Marrone, a Combonian missionary who for the last 10 years has been in charge of a project in the Diocese of Lira for orphaned children affected by HIV, which provides access to primary education. Covid has hit Uganda hard, with long periods of lockdown, during which all schools were closed and many economic activities and transport stopped. This situation further prostrated poor families living in rural settings, depriving them of almost all means of livelihood. So Sister Maria's service changed and her visits to the villages became essential, where she could see for herself the reality in which the children benefiting from her project live. Scabies, hunger, despair: how can one bring a little hope and help at the time of the covid? This is how we have supported Sister Maria for months, so that she could donate some farmyard animals to the many families (remember the goats and piglets in Wecare?!), but also so that she could offer some teenagers the chance to learn a trade (mechanic, carpenter, tailor, hairdresser, barber...) and thus become financially independent, while also having the chance to help their families. The cost of a work grant for one year of learning at a craftsman's is €500. Given the success of the first 7 boys and girls sponsored by Wecare, we have decided to donate another 10 scholarships. If anyone would like to contribute and enable other children to learn a trade, they are welcome to do so.
